Meeting on May 10

We received a call from Bev Carey confirming that she has reserved a room at the IU on the morning of May 10, from 8:30 - 12:00 for us to meet. Please post some of the topics you would like to see discussed at our morning session.

Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that Bev has asked our group to work with the afternoon participants on May 10 (mostly middle, other high school, and a few elementary librarians) to help establish the elementary and middle school groups. We're not quite sure how the afternoon will look, so please post suggestions.

In the past we have shared tips for managing students in the library. I'd like to see a follow-up to this discussion in order to discuss which of these tips we have used and what is working.

Afternoon: Meet with the full group for an overview, then break into smaller groups.

Afternoon: During the overview we can show a PowerPoint and have examples of what we have accomplished with the high school group for the last few years.

I am sorry I will miss the morning session since I will be at the IMRS meeting. However, I look forward to the Pm session. A PowerPoint of highlights is a great idea.
I will post back with ideas to include...
Thanks for setting this up. A great idea!

We have created a library pass that is unique to the library in color and format. THis seems to be working well with the exception of students coming from lunch.

I also like Deb's idea of addressing the management of students in the library. This is an ongoing issue for us and, I imagine, is an important issue for most libraries. How do we accommodate the changing needs of students in a library environment which includes collaborative study space, while also acknowledging the more "traditional" needs of quiet, study space?

I'm looking forward to our 5/10 gathering...

Morning: Can we bring the middle school librarians so they can see how a meeting is run? Or should we just invite them for the afternoon.
Also, is this taking the place of the spring POWER library meeting or is that another day.

Afternoon description sent to Bev. What do you think?

Frequently there is only one librarian in a building and there is little opportunity for the librarian to share information, lesson plans and promotional strategies with other librarians working at the same level. The issues for the librarian are significantly different at each level because of scheduling and rosters, the age of the students, and the content being taught. The High School Librarians’ Group has been meeting semi-annually since November 2, 2004. Through self-selected topics, facilitated sharing, educational protocols, feedback and reflection with other librarians at the same level, many in the group have found High School Librarians’ Group meetings and blog to be our most valuable professional development. Some of the tips and learning gleaned from these sessions have been: collaboration ideas, student management and discipline in the library, resource suggestions, lesson ideas, and technology policies and management. The purpose of the afternoon session will be to share an overview of the High School Librarians’ Group and to establish and facilitate sharing for Elementary and Middle Level Librarians’ Groups. Please bring one or all of the following to share with your group during the afternoon session: a lesson plan (20 copies), a description of a successful library event (20 copies), and/or a resource.

I think this descriptor covers everything very well. Good job.
Also, I totally agree with Marion about the library environment and how to accomodate all needs.

Within that topic, I'd like to know from others how they handle the use of iPods. As a rule, we don't allow them in the library. However, more and more teachers are allowing the use of them and it actually hasn't been a bad thing. Kids are less distracted from the surrounding activity and are more quiet themselves.

At this point we believe the afternoon will look like this:

Large group format - Power Point presentation

Break the large group into smaller groups of 7-10 people with two people from the high school group guiding them through the meeting process. We have asked Bev to ask the librarians to bring a resource to share, and information about an event that is held in the library or in collaboration with the library.

Large group discussion. Hopefully a few volunteers to lead the way for the middle and elementary librarians.

Morning: I would like to add a discussion of Web 2.0 or Ed 2.0 and what it will look like in our libraries. If anyone has any examples to share -- that would be great!

Thank you, Debra & Noreen for a terrific meeting! Although I could not attend most of the morning meeting, I thought the afteroon session was very well done and well recieved.
Let me know if you need the contact emails from the librarians who are district reps for IMRS.
