Debra & Noreen share pass system used @ CRS. They use vision software to supervise student use on computers to eliminate game playing and other non-academic use (so does Pennridge).
Teacher passes are very specific so librarians can see what students are supposed to be working on when they come in.
How to monitor computer use?
Some schools have sign-out sheets next to the computer to record which students have been on the computer. They record time in and time out. It's very helpful for determining which student may have been responsible for vandalism on that computer.
Signing In
Most librarians agree that it is important to have students sign in upon arrival @ the library. This is in addition to producing a pass from a teacher. Many times sign-in sheets have been used as legal documents in prosecution of students who engage in illegal behavior.
Lunch policies? Food/Drink policy?
Passes are necessary at CRS & CBW during lunch. Other libraries don't require them during lunch. Sometimes it's too crowded over the lunches. Sometimes students need to be turned away.
Bensalem has closed cafeteria - not allowed out unless escorted by security. There, students are encouraged to go to the library on their way to lunch. If they stay, they cannot eat.
George School recently changed their policy from allowing food to not allowing food.
Consequences for breaking the rules
Recommended that consequences should be posted along with the rules. What becomes a "sticky" situation is when students violate the rules when they're in the library with a teacher.
Student IDs
Only 2 schools require students to wear ID badges. This would be helpful in the library in determining who belongs to the school and who is a visitor and doesn't belong in the space. For security reasons, and with such large school populations, it would lead to a safer climate to have students be easily identifiable.
Librarian as research facilitator
Some librarians express frustration that teachers are not seeking their input for research assignments.
Lisa M. (Pennridge) goes into the classrooms of teachers signing up to use the library. For 15-20 min, Lisa delivers a presentation on the library's resources that have always been well-received by teachers & students.
Other librarians take their show on the road as well. Several librarians do instruction inside and outside of the library.
Charging for printing?
There are a few libraries that charge for laser printing in excess of 10pgs & color printing. This helps reduce waste of paper. It also depends upon whether the library has to pay for their own toner/paper out of their budget.
About 4 libraries allow iPods in the library. Volume needs to be low enough that it does not disturb others around them.
Sometimes, district or school policy means they cannot be allowed in the library, even though librarians might be willing to allow them.
Librarians who allow them report that they keep students quiet and working throughout the period. Students are less likely to misbehave if they are listening to their favorite music.
Cell phone use?
All libraries do not allow cell phone use in the library during school hours. After school rules are more permissive of cell phones.
The purpose of the BCLA is the advancement of the interests of library/media centers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; the interpretation of library/media service to users; and the promotion of cooperative efforts among all libraries in the county.
